XX Scharnhorst is inspired by the Battle of North Cape, which took place in the icy waters of the Arctic on Boxing Day 1943 and saw German battle cruiser Scharnhorst sunk by Royal Navy warships, among them HMS Belfast. The piece composed by Orlando Gough responds to HMS Belfast’s monumental past to tell the story of the battle.
A breathtaking performance is created by a womens' choir, a German choir and a percussion ensemble of young men who drum against the fabric of the vessel itself.
Performances by Deutscher Chor London (dir. Barbara Höfling), The Bluebird Chorus and a group of percussionists from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Trinity College of Music. Direction by Emma Barnard.
Commissioned by the Thames Festival, this is the finale of a two-year project which commenced at Thames Festival 2011 - you can see a video of Transmission in our video gallery by clicking here.
